F. Neelis Roberts, one of the founders of Slattery, Marino & Roberts, passed away at his residence on January 22, 2009. In 1991, Mr. Roberts formed the law firm after being a partner in a number of law firms, including Gordon, Arata, McCollam & Duplantis; Dotson, Babcock & Scofield; and Jackson Walker.

Early in his career, Mr. Roberts practiced primarily in mineral title examination and title curative matters, oil and gas-related litigation and bankruptcy, the acquisition and disposition of mineral-producing properties, Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act matters, exploration, development, operating and joint venture agreement negotiations, energy-related financing transactions, unitization and conservation-related state regulatory work, and other energy-related matters. 

Mr. Roberts served as lead trial counsel in numerous oil and gas litigation matters, in federal and state courts and in matters referred to alternative dispute resolution. Mr. Roberts had extensive experience before federal and state boards and agencies, including the Louisiana State Mineral Board, the Louisiana Office of Conservation, and the Minerals Management Service. His litigation experience included practice before federal and state appellate courts and administrative appeals. He represented major oil companies, independent oil companies, individual investors, financial institutions, and trade associations.

Mr. Roberts rendered numerous title opinions on oil and gas properties including drill site, preliminary, limited, division order, and supplemental title opinions, and cover private, state, and federal lands. In connection with such matters, he represented sellers, buyers, investors, lenders, and interested third parties in various types of oil and gas related transactions, including acquisitions, mergers, dissolutions, initial offerings, commercial loans, private loans, and equity placements. He has also represented operators, working interest owners, and landowners in the negotiation and preparation of all types of oil and gas contracts, including leases, seismic options and permits, agreements related to financings, operating agreements, joint exploration and development agreements, unit agreements, production and facilities agreements, and joint venture agreements.

Mr. Roberts represented both debtors and creditors in oil and gas related bankruptcy cases, including reorganizations and liquidations. His representation of debtors included acting as special counsel in Louisiana litigation, financings, and administrative matters. He also represented creditors in matters of debt collection and securitization, prosecution of adversary proceedings, post-petition financing, and plan negotiation and preparation.

Mr. Roberts was a lecturer at the Mineral Law Institute in 1989 and 1997. He served as a Member of the Advisory Council from 1994 through 1996, and served with distinction from 1996 to 1999 as Chairman of the Louisiana Mineral Law Institute. He served as a Member of the Legal Committee for the Interstate Oil Compact Commission for the period 1989 through 1999.

Mr. Roberts was a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Professional Landmen's Association of New Orleans and the American Association of Professional Landmen.

Neel was the beloved husband of Teresa C. Roberts. Father of Everard Ellis Roberts, Connor S. Roberts, Courtland N. Roberts and Taylor A. Roberts. Son of Frank Smith Roberts, Jr. and the Late Joe Anne Neelis Roberts. Brother of Mollie Roberts, Beckie Henricks, Missy Duncan and Caroline Toso. Neel was born in Jennings, Louisiana on September 5, 1956.
